I am sure you have heard of “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see” a children’s book classic, written and illustrated by Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle, making it a perfect read-aloud for young readers on World Book Day! It is even great for young bilingual readers and learners as it reviews vocabulary words and colors. This book has probably even been translated into your target language. In this post, I am going to share a few hands-on activities that your kids can do as you read them the book or after they have read it to you!
Today is World Book Day!
World Book Day is an UNESCO event with 100 countries around the world participating. They are on a mission to give every child a book of their own.
“Reading for Pleasure” is the single-biggest indicator of a child’s future success more than their family circumstances, parents’ educational background or their income.

About the Book
Brown Bear Brown Bear what do you see, was published in 1967 and was written and illustrated by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. This book was written for toddlers to associate colors and meaning to objects, but it is favorite among my children, both young and old. The book was actually edited numerous times through the years to include a teacher, a gray mouse and a pink elephant. The pair, Carle-Martin, went on to publish three other books with similar repetitive phrases like Polar Bear Polar Bear what do you hear, Panda Bear Panda Bear, what do you see, Baby Bear Baby Bear what do you see. School Library Journal named it as part of the top 100 Children’s Books in 2002.

– Make up your own version of the story by drawing and writing it out.
– Play I-spy game like you saying the Name of Child, name of Child, what do you see? Child responds back I see a _____ and then child says name of parent, name of parent what do you see
-After reading this book multiple times, start leaving out words in order for the child to say them.
-Use gestures to help promote word recall like pointing to eyes for see or your ears to hear or your nose to smell
